Term 4

Welcome back!
It is great to have such an enthusiastic bunch of students returning after the holidays - what a delightful few days we have had. 

To begin this term, we will be looking at Captain Cook and his discoveries. We have identified the things that we already know about Captain Cook and in our cooperative groups we wrote down questions that we would like to answer.

For home learning this week you were asked to find 5 interesting facts about Captain Cook. Add your comments to this post. On Friday we will see how many of our questions have been answered!

NUDE FOOD DAY

NUDE FOOD DAY.

In Room 4 we have been talking about NUDE FOOD DAY and discussing why this is so important.
We had a look on the internet at the plastic Island and it made us very sad to see how our actions are having such a negative impact on the environment.


We are going to try really hard to be kind to our environment and think carefully about how we dispose of our rubbish.

Here are some facts that we have found out:

• 60% of rubbish that ends up in the bin could actually be recycled.

• In many cases, a litre of bottled water is more expensive than a litre of petrol.

• Bottled water produces up to 1.5 million tons of plastic waste per year.

• Recycling one aluminium can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours.

• If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year.

NUDE FOOD DAY is on 17th October 2012.

Next Wednesday 19th September Room 4 is going to have a practise run. We will be sharing our lunchboxes and seeing who has the best "NUDE" lunch!!

We will take photos so have a look to see who our winner is!!

What an awesome feeling to be able to present a cheque to the SPCA on Friday at assembly. I know that they were very pleased with the amount raised.
Great work team!!

Tomorrow (Monday) is the BEACH RACES!!
Fingers crossed for sunny weather and lots of energetic children.

As you are eating your breakfast, think carefully about what your goals are.

Do you want to win?
Do you want to come in the top 5?
Do you want to run the whole way and not stop when you get tired?

Keep that goal in mind as you are running as it will help you stay focused.

SPCA Cupcake Day

SPCA Cupcake Day

27th August is the SPCA Cupcake Day.
Room 4 wanted to be the "community kind" and show our support for this organisation so we decided to hold a Cupcake Day at Awapuni School.

WOW!!!
 What an awesome turn out. There were some amazing cupcakes and lots and lots of Awapuni students remembered to bring their money to buy a cupcake.

We will announce at the Friday assembly just how much money we raised for the SPCA.

A day of diving...

Thank goodness for the rain yesterday, it meant that I could stay inside all day and watch the Olympics!!

I really enjoyed watching the 10m platform diving finals. I can't believe the things those men could do.
 If you think back to your Olympic pool challenge earlier in the year when you had to jump off the high diving board you will have some understanding of how they were feeling.
Although our high diving board is only about 3m high and the one they jumped off was 10m!!

It was amazing to hear the support from the crowd as each person stood on the platform ready to jump. 
It must be a surreal feeling hearing all of those spectators cheering for you. I felt a bit sorry for the Chinese competitor who got the silver medal. He was devastated to have missed out on the gold as China was going for 8 from 8 in the diving competitions.However, I would also be super happy and proud of myself for even getting into the finals so he shouldn't be too hard on himself.

Fueling our bodies like a champion

Today we had a look at an infographic about athletes diets.
We looked at the swimmers diet and saw that he ate a whopping 3000 - 6000 calories a day!!
That is more than double what the average person needs to eat.
We noticed that he had lots of small meals throughout the day (sometimes it was a special protein shake) and he had lots and lots to drink.
We also noticed that he had a power nap during the day so you wouldn't be able to go to school or work if you were training for the olympics.
